Eric Byres (P.Eng, ISA Fellow) is one of the architects of modern Operational Technology (OT) security and a defining voice of the discipline since its emergence in 2001. Long before OT security became a board level concern, Eric helped invent the field itself—most notably as the creator of the Tofino Industrial Firewall, the world’s first firewall purpose built for industrial control systems. He led Tofino from academic research to global adoption and acquisition by Belden Inc., where it became the most widely deployed OT specific firewall, licensed by industry leaders such as Honeywell, Schneider Electric, and Caterpillar. Beyond technology, Eric helped shape the rules of the game. As founding chair of the ISA 99 technical working group, he played a pivotal role in establishing the standards and frameworks that underpin today’s OT cybersecurity programs. Today, as Senior Partner at ICS Secure Ltd, Eric advises industry and governments worldwide on OT security and software supply chain risk—continuing to influence where the field goes next.
